1942 and onwards

Hubli to Perambur
I have come from Hubli bag and baggage.
I have taken part in many activities both domestic, official, private, social etc.,

Korattur lands:
Father and myself went full scale for land tilling. Father has put a small house in the first plot called Palmyrah plot because it is surrounded by palmyrah trees.
I cut the tree and put brick kiln and made a well out of the bricks made by me without paying for the bricks. Depending on lake water was a problem for crops and so decided to dig out a well and then put an oil engine. I had to go in search of old Peter engine and I could locate one in Kilpauk and transported it to Korattur. Hell with all these problems.

Oil engine/Motor
Then oil engine is a problem. I had to make hundreds of trips to Saidapet Taluq Office to bring electricity and buy motor for irrigation. This is again a hell of amount of job for day to day running to Saidapet.
I had good yield and had good money and good rice in the house.

Winding up ploughing
At some point of time, father and myself decided to give it on lease and we left the Korattur plouging.

3/2 tenements for rental
Father made the 3/2 lane house with small tenements and rented it for tenants.

Secretary
I was the Secretary of the Nehru Youth League and did social service of giving ration cards and other public services of giving rations, k.oil and other public distribution system of the government. I got a good name along with Mannar Pillay who was a senior and well mannered gentleman who has no English knowledge but a practical human natured man.

Perambur Carr Works and Loco Works
I fought and fought and got the local trains stopped in the Perambur Carriage works and Loco Works due to too much of work and persuasion. It is great feather in my cap. I saw to it that local tickets are also issued in front of the station just near the over bridge.

My office in M.S.D
My office inside the Perambur Loco Works, Mechanical Stores Depot worked to the time of 7 to 11.30 and 12.30 to 4.30. I used to come on cycle and leave the cycle to someone to deliver at home in Agaram and take the workmen train to go to Korattur and help father for the land tilling work and ploughing work and the agricultural work. This went on for some years and we got tired and started to wind up the Korattur work.

Sister and lay out
Sister made a blue print of her lands and did DTP planning and she had included our lands also for converting the lands to building sites. Hers was called ‘Subalaxmi Nagar’ and mine was no name. She sold all her lands converted to DTP documented grounds and we also sold. I think I sold it after father has died and not before and I don’t remember the exact date of my selling. Since the documents were signed by we brothers and sisters, it means that the sale was done after father’s death and also mother’s death. I am not very sure of the dates at this point of time.

My selling grounds thro Doraisamy
I used to come from Varanasi and sole the grounds with the help of broker
Doraisamy, a draftsman of the TNEB in those days and he died due to heart attack and it was a problem after him, to sell the 4 grounds left for us with the well intact as a toke of remembrances but the circumstances and the social problem were bad and the title may be a problem due to our absences from the scene and the local chaps would misuse play hell. The last remnants of the 4 grounds were also sold and there is no land at all at Korattur.

Names of lands
The lands were named for easy recognition and talking by me and it is me and my father only would recognize the names. It is just like naming the dogs and be close to the pets. Panamarathu thalai, then comes Akka Talai, then comes Kathavarayan Thalai, then comes 175 cents talai, then comes HT post thalai down the Rly line and so on.

Struggling for time to write my ‘Blog’.
There was a set back in writing my ‘Life Story’. Busy throughout. Laliram Diesel Spares is taking much of my time. Lot of thinking, planning and execution for this. New Year target given is too much to achieve. New vistas of opening to be planned. Vizag Port Trust and Steel Plant and NTPC Ramagundam MGR to be covered. Lot of thinking.
Anyway, let me write today. Got up at 4.45 am and finished my irfca and now is the time I am starting for this ‘BLOG’.
………….
1942- Period remembering well

Back to Agaram:
From Hubli, we packed up things after father’s retirement.
We went back to our old ancestral house at 3, Agaram, Murthy Raja St. 3/1 belonged to my Chinnayana. He gave this house on sale. My another Chinnayana was staying there. After purchase, he moved to his f.in.law place in Rajampeta.

Something about my sister and her children
My father’s younger sister, Kaveri Amma was living in the next village Nandalur, Seshamambapuram. Kaveri Aunt’s son Subbarayudu and another is Subramaniam alias Siva Sankara Sarma to whom my younger sister Saraswathi was given in marriage. My

Sarasu sister was having 3 sons and 3 daughters. Premnath is eldest, plus 2 more and Ammulu, was the eldest,Srimathi and Vijayam are the daughters plus 1 more I am forgetting the name along with the 2 boys.

Ammulu did her M.A and PhD in English and she is working as Head of Dept in Pachayappa’s college, Madras, Srimathi also got her PhD in History on ‘History of Ceylon’ and Vijayam was happy with her job as a sincere and devoted and inspiring school teacher in Joshi’s famous Mint High School. Subramania Sarma of Proddutur married Ammulu and he is also PhD in English. He started in Devasthanam College in Tirupathi and moved to Tondiarpet College and now he is in Yemen and other middle eastern countries colleges. He is a disciplined and sincere devoted boy and used to spend money on his parents and the in-laws of his sister, and many people and his heart is large to thing big and not having any narrow minded decisions usually common in Indian families.

My eldest sister: Subbalaxmi.
She had 3 sons and 1 daughter.
That one daughter I married in 20.5.1948 along with my sister Sarasu with Subramaniam.

Her 3 sons: Ramani did his M.A in History, Duraimani did his M.Sc in Geology, Nagamani did his M.Sc from BHU with me when I was in DLW Rly Colony, Varanasi
Jayamani did his Spectroscopy with Distinction, Choodamani did his B.Sc (Hons). All my b.in.laws stayed with me for various periods and did their college and went out in search of jobs and all are settled well.

Ramani had 2 sons Ramesh who married Savithri Grand Daughter of President VV Giri,
Gokul had his good academic studies in financial subjects.Aruna did her graduation and married to a good family and good husband Mahesh and Lavanya also got herself recently married to a highly educated boy and she had a son who is 12 months old a few days back.Aruna has a daughter Aparna who is exemplary in her thoughts and attainments and living and a worthy girl for a worthy parents.

Why to write on family matters and it is endless and let me stop at this point of time. I have to write many things about my life, my career and success and failures and many things of my life.

Friday, October 06, 2006

I will tell something of 1941 and 1942.

S.S.L.C
I wrote my annual exam in March 1942 and the results were out in May 1942 and I passed in the S S L C exam.

What is S.S.L.C book?
To go back, when the student is in Vth form which means 1 year before SSLC or VIth form, the SSLC will be filled up. Mr. Alavandar, Asst Head Master will fill up the name, father’s name, identification, date of birth and other details and a book will be got ready.
That will contain the marks of 4th and 5th and 6th Form examinations and in the end of the book the SSLC Public Examination will be entered in red ink. The class average, school average and the State average of the subjects will be entered in that SSLC book..

My father working in the last year of his Rly service career:
I came to Hubli where my father was posted as Passenger Inspector. He used to go on tour to his jurisdiction of : Hubli to Gadag, Solapur (MSM) as there was another Solapur (GIP) was there and Hubli to Miraj and Harihar..

In 1942, How I got my Rly job?
One day, when I was with my father in Platform No: 1, a gentleman called Subbarayan, who was ward keeper in Mech Stores Depot, told my father that there is a vaancey of a clerk and my son should apply. I took a paper from somewhere and wrote out some English and gave it to Mr Subbarayan. I got a all letter. My Robson, DCOS was interviewing me by putting some questions showing a balance sheet form with him and he asked me what is the minimum limit and the maximum limit and balane on hand. I did not answer any question as his English with cigar in his mouth was intelligible to understand. But I was selected and asked to go for medical and join duty.

So much today.

STILL in 1940s and 1942s

Continuing the period upto 1942:-

Quit India Movement:
Somewhere early Jan or so, we all the students came out and saw what is happening outside.Full of police personnel in front of the playground before our school. It was something like the ‘Quit India Movement’. We were told that the big police force came to arrest Mohan Kumaramangalam son of Dr Subbarayan, a staunch Congressite.

School vacation and School pass:
During vacations, I used to fill up a form from the school and get a school pass to go to my father’s place. I used to go to Bezwada by the night train Puri Passenger and reach early in the morning. Father used to buy shirting for me at the rate of 6 yards per one rupee and give it for stitching. They are handloom cloth, coloured ones, from Chirala and the merchants used to sell at the station for the station staff..

Father as S I C and P.I
My father worked in Bezwada in 2 slabs. Once as Signaller-in-charge in the Telegraph office at Bezwada and he is called S.I.C. I used to learn the code of signaling and it is called as : kattu kada, kattu kattu kada, kada kada kattu, kada kada kattu and so on. I used to talk to my father and my mother used to say what are you talking without me knowing the gist of your talk.!

After some time, the signaling cadre was made surplus and all the signalers were transferred to various departments and my father was transferred to Traffic and posted as Platform Inspector at Bezwada.

Posted as ‘Receptionist’ in G.M office.
Then he was transferred as ‘Receptionist’ in Madras Central G.M’s office his office is next to the lift at the entrance. I am still having vague remembrance. Then he was transferred to Hubli as Platform Inspector.

Catarat operation.
My b.in.law Mr. P.R. Kalyanam, had a cataract operation from the eye doctor in Purnanandampet near the station.

Rly Qrs in east and West as SIC and P.I
As Platform Inspector, he was given quarters on the other side of the station.

Doors outside opening, inter class
The coaches in 1940s used to have doors opening outside and how dangerous it is, if I recollect those days now in 2006. There used to be first class, second class, and Inter class. I used to travel in inter class. There were no reservations in the sleeper class. People used to sleep in the lower benches. My father used to make the sleepers to get up and give space to the standing passengers and this work was a thankless job. People generally rush and sleep in the luggage berth in the top and since it is written for luggage only, nobody used to object if one sleeps in that upper berth.

Naxalite leaflets:
There used to lot of English leaflets and small bits of news paper cuttings and these were against the government. Now, I am thinking that was something like the ‘naxalite’ and they used to write in the leaflets that they will rise against the government and so on. I don’t know it is some underground movement in those days in Andhra and I still remember the various notices which used to be circulated in the station.
…………………………………………
Winding up:
So much now. I just got up and I thought why not write something of the old days.
Let me stop here and do my morning routine.
Paper, make payments being the first of the month, go to the eye doctor for check up,
Find out SAIL, NTPC addresses.
I did not get Rs 5000, again 500, again accounts statement. Let me go at 8 am itself and tell the manager to set right. I have already e-mailed to the E D on this. I will take a copy of this e-mail also.

LIFESTORY

LIFESTORY

EARLY SCHOOL LIFE AND EARLY DAYS

Early days.

How to remember days of 75 years back. Very difficult. From 83 years, to recapitulate 1930s and 1940s.

I used to play football called cover ball in the playground near my house.
My father when he comes to Perambur, Madras, used to take me to the Butmod called firing range for police to learn shooting. That area was an open area for playing.. Today, it is called Jawaharnagar, close to Perambur Loco Works station. Today the bridge which was about 80 years old, is to be rebuilt next year.

My father used to bring cover ball, called as Tennis ball and put 20 stones and this is called wicket. I used to throw the ball from 30 feet and if the stone falls, it means I won and all will come to put the stones back and I will throw the tennis ball upon them. This is a childÂ’s game which my father used to organize for me..
Probably, I was less than 10 years in those days and at that time.
So, tennis ball for football and tennis ball for cricket on stones wicket.
I am telling you ,these are two plays of mine..

Something, about my teacher in the Rao Bahadur Calavala Cunnan ChettyÂ’s High School. Subbaraya Chetty was my history teacher. Alavandar was my Asst Head Master,. Ramakrishna Iyer was my Head Master. K. Hanumantha Rao took over from Ramakrishna Iyer later on. Rathnasabapathy Mudaliar was my tamil teacher. Sivarama Iyer was my Drill Master. Monday and Wed and Fri were drill period and it was boring and the other days are games days and those days are happy days as we were to play games.

I got proficienccertificatete for History by Mr. Subbaraya Chetty by presenting a book as the present. I kept that book for a long time and I donÂ’t know where it is now.

My school was not recognized for holding S S L C examination and so all the students who are to appear for the final year SSLC are given hall tickets to the
E L M Fabricious School in Purasawakkam to write the examination there in that center.

In 1937, when I was attending school, I was taken as a Volunteer for the Mahatma GandhijiÂ’s arrival in the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachara Sabha Celebrations at T/Nagar, and I was close to Gandhi as a volunteer. I started learning Hindi and passed Prathmic, Madhyama and Rashtrabhasha examination say in 1940s or so.
...........................................................................................................................
2nd Oct 2006.
Today is Mahathma Gandhiji's birth day. Holiday mood in Madras. Sat was an holiday, Sunday was also an holiday and today Monday is also an holiday.
I did all work of despatching Rate Contract copies to Krishnarajapuram and Hubli. Went to the courier who is closed and came back without posting.
I went to sister at 95, as usual, to see her and give companympan;y; and good words. Surprise, Aruna and Mahesh came from Dubhai for the 60th celebrations of Mahesh's brother at HYD. Lavanya with her husband the baby child were also and I had a good company.
So, today is over with this note.
